Guitars are available for purchase or rental. Sometimes renting might be a good idea during the first few weeks of lessons; after that, it is probably not cost-effective.
I can’t stress enough the importance of having a well-adjusted good guitar.
Running a guitar teaching studio, I am asked on a daily basis by students, "Which guitar should I buy?" It would be easy if I could say go to store "X" and buy guitar "Y", but because guitars tend to be inconsistent (even within the same manufacturer and model) and because some discontinued used guitars are a better value than new ones-- for example Japanese-made Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters-- the answer is not so simple.

As a result, I stock guitars that I feel will be a lasting value for my students and others, and that are carefully handpicked from guitar shows and dealers around the country.

For beginners who might not want to spend a lot on their first guitar, I carry high quality reasonably priced guitars that would not have to be upgraded after the first stages of progress. These instruments include guitars that would not typically be found on the rack at a music store. I also have some great 'step up' guitars usually in stock.

My philosophy is that it is fine to learn the guitar on either electric or acoustic -- they are played in largely the same way-- as long as the instrument is (or can be) adjusted to play as easily as possible. I have seen beginners discouraged, almost to the point of giving up, by guitars that are hard to play, for example when the strings are too high off the neck. It is quite a revelation for these students when all of a sudden they can execute certain chords when I let them try my guitar.

I sell guitars pre-screened from a teacher’s perspective, not a store's. Let me help you find the right guitar for the amount you want to spend. I would never sell (or buy) any guitar that I would not be comfortable performing with, and I know what I am looking for.

I’m also looking to buy good instruments and will buy back guitars I have sold.

Strings

The Learning Set(TM) Guitar Strings, $14
For electric or acoustic. Individually colored guitar strings from the Rainbow String Company. Red/green/purple/yellow/blue/orange. Extra-life strings that last significantly longer. For use with The Learning Set(TM) Guitar Method by Ethan Fiks, also available here (see below). Strings are for learning or just cool looks.

DR Strings Pure Blues Electric 10s, $6.50
10-46 gauge standard medium. My choice for Fender and Gibson-style electric guitars.

DR Strings Pure Blues Electric 9s, $6.50
9-42 light gauge. Recommended for players wanting very easy fretting and bending. Good on '80s style guitars.

    DR Strings Sunbeam Acoustic, $8
12-54 gauge medium/light phosphor bronze. My favorite for acoustics or acoustic/electrics.

Great sounding. Virtually new. With manuals, soft case, stand, even original receipt. Portable.

    Sabine Zipbeat Metronome, $25
My preferred metronome. Features groupable beats (where every certain number of beats you can have a different sounding click). Loud enough to hear over the guitar. (If it's too loud put it under your pillow.)

    Shubb Capo, $20
Allows for easy key changes. Well-engineered, unlike those folky ones with the little nylon strap. Features a screw for adjustable pressure and easy clamping.
